OMD Peat Museum is a small house or a "shed" in Veita from 1826. The small museum shows in the form of images and tools how the hard work with turf was performed in the old days. We welcome groups for tours.
Peat, also called turf, was a convenient household fuel because there wasn't much firewood around. It's been used for cooking, heat, and what we would now call background lighting for longer than history has been written. In the 18th and 19th century cutting peat for fuel was an important part of life in North-Norway. The museum also shows some tools that were used in the 1800s. There were fishermen who lived in the buildings in Veita - which is the oldest remaining fisherman-farmer houses in Andøy. We welcome small groups for the tour – outside normal opening hours. Call for appointment. |
